Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. From what price does customs duty apply when ordering from Amazon?

Customs duty applies when the item price + international shipping combined exceeds USD 150. However, for US-origin items shipped via express carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS), the Korea-US FTA grants a duty-free threshold of USD 200. EMS and consolidation warehouse shipments use the standard USD 150 threshold.

Q2. Do consolidation warehouses and express carriers have different duty thresholds?

Yes. Express carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) are eligible for the US FTA $200 exception. Consolidation warehouses route through international postal service so the standard $150 limit applies. For orders between $150–$200, express shipping is advantageous.

Q3. Is the US FTA $200 exception applied automatically?

Yes, if the origin is the US and it ships via express carrier. If the item is manufactured in China or Vietnam and re-exported from the US (Amazon third-party sellers), the exception may not apply. Check that the invoice shows "Country of Origin: US." This calculator automatically applies the $200 threshold when US origin + express shipping are selected.

Q4. If I'm slightly over $150, is only the excess taxed?

No. If you exceed the threshold by even $1, duty and VAT apply to the entire taxable price (item + shipping), not just the excess. Near the threshold, it may be worth splitting your order.

Q5. How many health supplements can I import?

Up to 6 bottles per person per shipment, within total volume limits that vary by product. Items containing pharmaceutical ingredients (melatonin, DHEA, etc.) may be restricted; excess quantities can be denied entry.

Q6. How much alcohol can I import?

Personal imports are limited to 1 bottle (≤1L) and under USD 400. Liquor tax, education tax, individual consumption tax, customs duty, and VAT all apply. The calculator provides an estimate only — actual amounts may be higher; use the official customs estimator.

Q7. Is the 1% card overseas payment fee mandatory?

Most credit and debit cards charge ~1% overseas usage fee + ~1% network brand fee (Visa/Mastercard), totalling ~1–1.5% effective. Some travel reward cards refund this to 0% under certain conditions. The calculator defaults to 1%, toggleable via checkbox.

Q8. Who collects the 10% VAT and how?

For express and postal shipments over the threshold, the customs broker or courier collects duty and VAT together at clearance and remits to customs. You will receive a payment notice before your parcel is released.

Q9. Does perfume/cosmetics carry an additional consumption tax?

Perfume: 6.5% tariff + 10% VAT + 7% individual consumption tax. Regular cosmetics (skincare, makeup) are not subject to consumption tax — only 6.5% tariff + 10% VAT.

Q10. What taxes apply to luxury watches and bags?

Bags: 8% tariff + 10% VAT. High-end watches (unit value over ₩2M): additional 20% individual consumption tax on the amount exceeding ₩2M. Same applies to jewelry and precious metals over ₩2M.

Q11. What happens if I receive multiple items in one box on Black Friday?

If multiple shipments clear customs on the same day, they are aggregated and taxed as one. Separate your shipment dates by a few days to keep them below the threshold independently.

Q12. Is there no customs duty on books?

Printed books: 0% tariff and VAT-exempt. However, publications in DVD/USB format may be classified as electronics and taxed. Check the invoice description.

Q13. Can I use this calculator for orders from Japan or China?

Yes — select JPY or CNY and set the origin country accordingly. Japan has no FTA with Korea so the $200 exception doesn't apply. China has an FTA but most shipments go via postal service, so the $150 standard threshold applies in practice.

Q14. My result differs slightly from the official Korea Customs estimator. Which is correct?

The official Korea Customs Service is authoritative. This calculator uses representative tariff rates for 20 broad categories; actual HS codes can differ by ±1–5 percentage points. The FX snapshot also introduces 1–2% variance.

Q15. How does the share URL work?

Your inputs are automatically saved to the URL query string whenever you change them. Tap "Copy share URL" and paste it anywhere — recipients see the exact same inputs and results instantly.
